Solstice Eclipse Ride!

Frank said this about the plan:

"Let me be the first to say "Y'all are crazy!"
But in a good way."

Good thing there is still some crazy left in this world. Sheena and Zach are apparently in that group, since they joined us for a 3:00 am mountain bike ride to watch the eclipse!

Hit the sack at 6:30 the night before but slept like a kid before Christmas--kept waking up and peering out to make sure the moon was still out--smiling and falling back to sleep each time. The alarm went off at 2-dark o'clock and we crawled out to make coffee and stoke the fire. Still clear and you could already see the Earth's shadow taking a bite out of the moon. Woo!

We only expected Z to show but the first arrival was a pleasant surprise--Sheena! Now there were four nut-jobs for the eclipse ride! We geared up and rolled out--the eclipse had already entered totality, and it was dark out there! Really cool how many stars could be seen with a fool moon hanging above.

The clouds cooperated impeccably--we saw pretty much the whole eclipse before the sky was blotted out.

Got to see the eclipse go through its phases, got to have a sweet ride in the wee hours of the morning, got to share the experience with a couple other brave(?) stupid(?) insane(?) definitely awesome souls.
Of course, we listened to some Pink Floyd on the way to work.

Makes you remember there's a heck of a lot more out there than the 9-5, societal bickering, this here interwebs, and the insides of boxes. The year has turned! The Sun is starting its long journey back. Yes, Winter's ahead, but the days get longer for the next six months. Treasure the daylight AND the moonlight!

A Full Lunar Eclipse on the Solstice? Sweet!

Yeah, how often does it land right on the Winter Solstice? I'm sure pagans everywhere will be rejoicing. The year turns, the moon goes red, armageddon is nigh! Begin the slaughter! Oh, wait, maybe not.

DOOOOOOOOM!

Anyway, this one will be completely visible from start to finish in our neck of the woods....if the clouds cooperate. Keep your fingers crossed! It starts 1:33 am EST, with totality starting at 2:41 am and lasting 72 minutes. TOTAL TOTALITY is at 3:17 am. So, if you like sleeping, wake up around then to see the Moon of Doom!

Info and pics yanked from NASA!
Maybe we should do an early morn Solstice Eclipse FOOL DOOOM MOON ride...

Better Late than Never

I found my perfect hunting season riding outfit. Alas, it'll have to wait for next year.

Thanks to Wondermark for this pic!

Rothrock

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
We introduced Chillie to Rothrock on Sunday. She wanted to see what the terrain would be for the Trans Sylvania TV Epic next May and she'd never been to Rothrock? We told her to be ready to climb. And climb. And climb some more. We did a modified section of one of the stages that included Tussey Ridge Trail. Donna wanted redemption on it since her first foray didn't go so well. She got it! Had a lot more fun this time. For me, it was nice to get back there and remember some really great people and rides from college.
Jill really enjoyed the ride and said she needed to get out more. I can relate. Riding the same-old, same-old all the time tends to dull the senses and blunt the desire to swing a leg over the bike. The trips we've been doing this fall are helping to fan the flame again.

Iconic

We headed to West Virginny last weekend to ride the legendary North Fork Trail. Oddly enough, it was also the weekend of the first planned, "Save the North Fork Trail" ride, but we picked the weekend for our trip before the date for the ride was set, so there.

It seemed the entire weekend was about contingency plans but overall we had a great time anyway! The original plan was to find a shuttle to drop us at the South end and then ride North back to our car. The shuttle connections we had fell through, so we changed the scheme to "earning our turns" by laying out a loop ride instead. So now this original plan was to park at the Redman Run parking lot, ride south to Forest Road 79, climb the mountain, head south to High Knob, and then turn around and ride to the northern end of the trail, then close the loop with a road section back to the car. We figured roughly that it would be in excess of 30 miles.

Well, we got started late, like an hour and forty minutes late. And it seemed we didn't have the legs we hoped we would have. We never made it to High Knob. After climbing 79 up to the bitter end and reaching the radio tower, we checked the time, thought about the miles in front of us, and opted to eat our PBJs and enjoy the sun and start heading north. Finally hit actual, real trail after cruising back down the upper part of the road and then worked our way around a few backpackers. Sweetie had the unfortunate luck to fall right in front of a couple of them since we were hurrying to try to get away from them. Luckily she was okay but it didn't help brighten her mood! We kept stopping along the ridge as I would vainly seek the "iconic views" I had seen pictures of for years. Where in the hell are the views? Got some decent ones but none of that glorious cliffy ridgeline stretching off into the distance that you always see anytime someone gushes about the North Fork.

By the time we hit the Redman Run trail intersection, Sweetie was ready to bail to the car. It wasn't her day. We all have those. She had hers on Saturday. She was kind enough to offer to bring the car up to the northern trailhead if I wanted to finish the trail by myself, but honestly, it was pushing 3:00 by that time and I had no desire to ride the trail alone, for the first time. The idea of pizza at the Front Porch, followed later by steaks and salad by our campfire made the decision and we both enjoyed the sweet, sweet descent down Redman Run to the car.

It was the right choice. The rest of the afternoon and evening was primo. A great post-ride pizza snack and finding Harpoon Hard Cider at the general store (I honestly think this is one of the best mass-produced ciders in America. At least of those I have had.) followed by grass-fed organic steaks from JuJo Acres and tasty salad sourced from our CSA and the local farmers' market. A little campfire completed the evening as we discussed our Sunday plans.

Once again, we opted to change plans. Our original idea was to hike Seneca Rocks since Sweetie had never been down here before. This was, of course, assuming that we had ridden the entire North Fork Trail or put away 30+ miles on Saturday. However, after our aborted and unfulfilling stint on the bikes, we began earnestly considering hooking up with the "Save the North Fork!" ride on Sunday to hit up the northern section of the trail we bailed on. After not much discussion, it was decided. Forget the hike. Seneca Rocks would be open for a hike any other time. The future of riding the North Fork was less certain so riding on Sunday was the obvious way to go. Happy with our new contingency plans, we sacked out hard and slept great.

Man, this is turning into a novel. Didn't really mean for that to happen. Oh well.

Sunday dawned overcast. We crawled out of bed, got the requisite joe and breakfast in our systems, tore down camp, and hit the road for the Redman Run parking lot again. We ran into Ruthless and Roger Massey and, of course, Frank. The ride was much better than Saturday. A nice singletrack climb to wake up on, and then ridgetop. And then finally, the ICONIC VIEWS!

No wonder those ride organizers planned the group ride for the northern end of the trail. Smart people, they is. We dwadled, took pictures, and drank a cider, worked our way across the ridge and had some fun on the very techy top section of the final downhill (Well, I had some fun. Donna wasn't appreciating it as much.). After the initial rockfest, the trail turned to swoopy, super fast twisties littered with just enough loose rock to keep you honest. Hit the bottom, spun the pave back to the car, cleaned up, chatted a few minutes, and headed for home. Iconic.

Mmmm...Purply

This seems to be a love it/hate it color so far to those who have seen it. It's a bike. I ride it. It's fun.

The Alfine is breaking in nicely. I could get used to this deal--having gears but no derailleur.

Had to mod a Surly Tuggnutty to keep the wheel straight in the frame. 10 minutes with a Dremel did the job.

Wonder how long this frame will last? Hopefully long enough to save up for a Milk Money.

Re-Entry?

It's been rough so far!

Awake for over 19 hours on Friday with all the travelling and time changes,
Saturday was laundry, groceries and unpacking,
The bikes are still in pieces in the basement...

We did watch two movies, though. Donna was sick with whatever it was that had the other two ladies down during the trip so she was napping and sipping hot beverages, mostly. She's feeling somewhat better this morning, though.

This morning? It's a two crockpot kinda day. And listening to Glas Vegas.

Lots of our own tomatoes in one for future soup and sauce...

And a pork shoulder going into the other for carnitas later! Yeah!

We'll get more stories and pics up soon. We have bunches of pics to organize, caption, and upload to Smug. Stay tuned!

Oh yeah, and I plan to look into moving the No Handlebars blog content over here in the near future.
